3. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to develop a critical understanding of the theory and practice of teaching English as a second/ foreign (ESL/ EFL) language. All of the fundamental approaches and methods will be addressed from a historical perspective although an emphasis will be placed on the contemporary developments in the field. Each approach and method will be examined in terms of its theoretical background and its implications for teaching practice and material design.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1.Introduce learners to various theoretical perspectives on ESL/ EFL teaching;
2.Highlight the principles, assumptions and implications of the fundamental approaches and methods in the field;
3.Develop learners’ ability to analyze and evaluate different methods within the setting of contemporary ESL/ EFL teaching; and
4.Encourage learners to reflect on how theory informs their teaching practices.
